Gosling had locked in to star in the untitled Universal Pictures project, directed by Oscar-winning duo Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (Everything Everywhere All at Once).

The film, teased as a “fun sci-fi, action comedy with a big heart,” was set to begin production this summer in Los Angeles, bolstered by a multimillion-dollar California tax credit.

Gosling’s casting was celebrated as a major win, especially following his global box office triumph in Project Hail Mary.

But in a dramatic turn, Entertainment Weekly revealed that Eva Mendes’ partner has exited the project.

After the tax credit, the production could not change its shooting dates and Gosling’s packed schedule couldn’t accommodate the dates as it already includes Tough Guys with Will Ferrell and Star Wars: Starfighter.

The Daniels remain attached to direct and produce under their Playgrounds banner, with Jonathan Wang producing.

Gosling’s departure, however, has left fans wondering who will replace him.
