The Tony Award-winning actress seemed to captivate the packed house with her performance, particularly with a long, high note towards the end that earned fiery applause.
However, viewers watching the live broadcast were less impressed.
“The Kristin Chenoweth rendition of the National Anthem was a difficult listen,” one viewer commented on X.
Others were even more blunt: “What the hell was that national anthem?” and “This is the worst National Anthem I ever heard.”
Some drew comparisons to Fergie’s infamous 2018 NBA All-Star Game performance, saying it was “up there” with hers.
Despite the harsh criticism, some viewers praised Chenoweth’s rendition.
