Jimmy Kimmel and his wife, Molly McNearney, had a tough challenge ahead of them when they heard about his late-night show suspension.
The 57-year-old talk show host looked back at the sudden suspension of his show when he was accused of making insensitive remarks about Charlie Kirk’s death back in September in a recent interview, sharing how it affected his family.
“We go home, and our kids are there, and we realize they have no idea what’s going on,” McNearney said on the We Can Do Hard Things podcast, joined by her husband.
McNearney, who is the co-head writer and executive producer on Kimmel’s show, continued, “And we had to do that thing that parents do so well, which is just immediately put on a mask,” while their phones were blowing up with the latest updates.
However, Kimmel and McNearney soon realised that they would have to tell the kids – Jane, 11, and Billy, 8. “Our daughter is in fifth grade, and kids talk,” the mom of two added.
After the couple sat down with their kids, they appeared excited to listen, which didn’t last long and their daughter “immediately burst into tears” and told her parents, “I’ll sell my Labubus.”
McNearney then recalled that their son, Billy, asked if President Donald Trump was behind the suspension, “We looked at each other and we didn’t quite know how to answer that question,” but Kimmel admitted that he had to say yes.
The parents still upheld the belief for their kids that the show would come back, although they weren’t so sure themselves.
“Jimmy and I both believed that night the show was never coming back,” McNearney admitted, however, as it followed, the show was back on within a week.
